At all times, but particularly at a moment like this one when we grasp for
meaning and guidance during this crisis, the arts explore and define the
essence of the human experience. They hold the power to build understanding
and offer alternative ways to communicate and express our feelings and
thoughts. Children and young people today are especially in need of the
arts to cope with disaster, and engage with and learn from each other and
their peers around the world.
As we all find ways to deal with the recent events, the staff and leadership
of the Arts Education Partnership wants to extend our thoughts and concerns
to those of you who have been affected, especially our friends and
colleagues in New York City. We also want to share with you and your
constituents some important opportunities for action during this time:
1) If you are not already doing so, we urge all of you to partner with
your communities and schools to ensure that young people have access to the
resources they need to draw on the power of the arts to respond to the
recent tragedies.
2) We ask you to share with us information on any projects that you are
working on that help schools and communities deal with this crisis, or the
results from such projects, so that we can make such information available
to all members of the Arts Education Partnership.
3) Please share with us descriptions of any resources (books, websites,
articles, etc.) that you have found helpful in coping with disaster,
particularly those that illuminate the importance of the arts in addressing
conflict and discrimination, healing, self-expression, community building,
and generating understanding. This is a time when we can especially benefit
from community partnerships and from sharing knowledge across the field of
arts education.
If you have any ideas, project descriptions or easily accessed resources
that you would like to share, please e-mail them to us at aep@ccsso.org. We
will make every attempt to compile them and post them on the Arts Education
Partnership website (available at http://aep-arts.org) in the coming weeks
and announce their availability through the "ArtsEd" listserv. Instructions
for joining the listserv are available on the AEP web site in the
"Information" section.
At this time, we would like to share a few resources with you:
The Healing Power of the Arts Website from the Colorado Council of the Arts,
funded by the National Endowment for the Arts:
http://www.artslynx.org/heal -- "A resource to investigate the power of the
arts as a force for positive change in our lives and in our community."
Ed Week's Website offers resources for teachers and adults helping children
to cope with the recent events:
http://www.edweek.org/ew/newstory.cfm?slug=03resources.h21.
Refer to The Arts and Healing Network Website for ideas of what others have
done to use the arts in healing their communities: http://www.artheals.org
Watch the website of Americans for the Arts (http://www.artsusa.org).
Coming soon, they will devote a section of their web page to "information
about public art tributes nationwide."
PBS is providing a number of resources for Parents and Educators on its web
site available at: http://www.pbs.org/americaresponds/ Some of these
resources address tolerance, emergency preparedness, fear, and patriotism.
Thank You, a website demonstrating the power of images in healing and in
building community: http://thankyou.is-root.com/index.html.
