I really liked what Cynthia was saying about populism and blurring the
distinction between art and life. I think that that may be the most
pertinent issue in art today: how can it be revitalized and wrestled
away from the cloistered clutches of the culturati? It is the question
that Komar and Melamid have been addressing, but they haven't really
offered solutions, despite the entertainment value of their admirable
project.

I also agree that Art as Experience is as pertinent today as the day
it was written in many respects. It's been about a decade since I last
perused it, but it has had a lasting impression. I remember finding
that Dewey's comparison of tribal cultures who's art was fundamental
to their lives to our clinical disassociation was (and is)
particularly illuminating. As he pointed out, we put the same objects
in a museum under glass. Perhaps that isn't all bad, but it does seem
that we would benefit from a reconnection of art and life.

Thanks for your comments Cynthia,

Glenn English
