Hi Ellery and awbim listmembers,
Ellery and I were talking about art and mind at Dave Chalmers's party
over the weekend and he (Ellery) made an interesting observation that
artists represent the contents and workings of consciousness. I am
fond of this notion of artists as neuro-researchers. Amy Ione |1| has
suggested similar ideas over the years too, as has Semir Zeki <2>. If
there is one idea that I hope we expand on, it is the possibility of
looking at art as a method of consciousness studies.
For those of you who don't already know, David Chalmers (best known
for coining the phrase, "the hard problem" in his book, The Conscious
Mind) has compiled an enormous annotated bibliography for the
philosophy of mind, as well as links to thousands of online papers on
the subject. /3\
Concerning virtual reality, Ellery's son Jaron's homepage {4} is a
worthwhile place to explore. Jaron came up with the term "virtual
reality" and there may be few if any others with his expertise on the
subject. BTW, on Jaron's page he states, "If you are technical and
creative and are looking for VR-related work in the NYC area, please
send me a resume."
At the Tucson 2000 conference \5/ I met several interesting folks from
the CAiiA - Star* program who had a lot of sophisticated things to say
about virtual environments. I know that some of you are on the list,
so perhaps you would like to add some thoughts. CAiiA - Star* hosts
the consciousness reframed conference in August. [6]
